Le rider français signe une victoire époustouflante pour son retour à la compétition après deux ans d’absence.
Le Red Bull Linecatcher 2010 a profité de conditions de neige parfaites et d’un temps radieux pour offrir un spectacle qui marquera l’histoire du freeski. Les 16 riders ont pu exprimer toutes leurs qualités de skieurs au cours des 3 runs de la compétition et offrir un spectacle exceptionnel au public de Vars la Forêt Blanche. C’est le rider français Richard Permin qui eut la lourde tâche d’ouvrir le bal après avoir hérité du dossard numéro 1 hier soir lors du tirage au sort. Son départ en switch (en arrière) sur le premier kicker allait donner le ton d’un contest où les riders proposèrent une grande variété de figures et firent preuves de qualités aériennes étourdissantes. Ce premier passage fut marqué par les très beaux runs de l’Américain CR Jonhson, de l’Allemand Bene Mayr avec trois gros sauts et du Canadien Sean Pettit avec une descente très rapide pimentée d’un Cab 5 et de deux 360.
Le second run mit à nouveau en valeur le jeune Canadien Sean Pettit lors d’une descente très fluide et engagée avec d’énormes tricks dont un backflip Japan, l’Américain Sage Cattabriga-Alosa avec quatre 360 dans un run très rapide, l’Allemand Bene Mayr avec un énorme Rodeo 720 et le Québéquois JP Auclair avec trois gros tricks dont un backflip. Mais ce deuxième passage aura surtout été marqué par un run ahurissant de Candide Thovex qui enchaînait un 720, un 360 et un backflip avec des transferts fulgurants entre chaque saut. Il perdait malheureusement un ski en regagnant l’aire d’arrivée car l’une de ses fixations avait déchaussé sur une réception. Les juges commençaient dès lors à argumenter pour savoir quel degré de pénalisation lui imputer, sa performance étant la plus impressionnante de la compétition.
Heureusement, Candide mit tout le monde d’accord lors de la troisième manche en reprenant exactement la même ligne avec la même vélocité. En dépit d’une nouvelle descente exceptionnelle de Sean Pettit avec notamment un énorme 360 sur une barre de 15 mètres - qui lui vaudra le Oakley Sick-O-Award récompensant la meilleure figure - Candide terminait à la première place et démontrait qu’il était revenu à son meilleur niveau après son accident de 2007. “C’est le premier événement auquel je participe depuis ma blessure et je voulais savoir où j’en étais après avoir passé une année de remise en jambe. Quand Julien (ndlr : Julien Régnier Lafforgue) m’a invité et que j’ai su quels riders seraient présents, je n’ai pas pu refuser. Je suis vraiment comblé de me retrouver sur la première marche du podium surtout quand on voit les gros calibres qui étaient présents aujourd’hui,” déclarait Candide tout sourire après avoir été copieusement arrosé de champagne par ses deux compagnons sur le podium : le Canadien Sean Pettit, deuxième, et l’Américain CR Johnson, troisième.
Pour le jeune Sean Pettit, 17 ans, skieur prodigieux et star précoce, ce format de compétition comblait toutes ses attentes : “Cet événement est tout simplement génial. Je ne pourrais être plus comblé, tout le monde a envoyé du lourd.” Quand à CR Johnson, revenu à la compétition après quatre ans d’absence, ce podium représentait un moment précieux : “Aujourd’hui est un jour bénit. L’esprit de la montagne et des gens étaient fantastiques. C’était une journée magnifique.”
Parmi les personnes euphoriques à l’issue de la compétition, on trouvait également le Varsin Mathieu ‘Mati’ Imbert, qui offrit trois superbes runs à son public. Mati, avec un sourire encore plus grand qu’à l’accoutumé, se réjouissait de participer à la naissance d’une nouvelle ère du freeski : “On a réussi à réunir les conditions parfaites. Cette année, on a fini d’ériger cette nouvelle marche pour notre discipline. L’an passé c’était déjà bien, mais là, à Vars, chez moi, on a consolidé le futur de notre sport.” Quant au concepteur de l’évènement, Julien Régnier Lafforgue - qui faisait également partie du jury avec l’Américain Tanner Hall, l’Allemand Nico Zacek et le Français Camille Jaccoux - lui d’ordinaire réservé, avait du mal à cacher sa satisfaction : “Conditions incroyables, très haut niveau, parfait, mission accomplie !”
Candide Thovex succède donc au Canadien Anthony Boronowski et accroche une nouvelle victoire à son prodigieux palmarès. Sa performance, son intérêt, ainsi que la venue de toutes les plus grandes stars du backcountry illustre l’intérêt de ce nouveau format de compétition. Le succès de la seconde édition du Red Bull Linecatcher marque sans nul doute, comme l’indique Mathieu Imbert, la naissance d’une nouvelle ère des compétitions de freeski.

The French rider claims a stunning victory upon his return to competition after a two year absence.
The Red Bull Linecatcher 2010 has benefited from perfect snow conditions and blue skies creating a show that makes freeskiing history. The 16 riders were able to show case their talents during the 3 runs of the competition and provide an exceptional show to the Vars la Forêt Blanche public. The French rider Richard Permin had the difficult task of opening the final day of competition after inheriting bib number 1 at the draw last night. His switch start (skiing backwards) on the first kicker set the tone for a contest with riders proposing a variety of shapes and showing stunning aerial skills. This first passage was marked by the very fine runs of American CR Johnson, German Bene Mayr with three impressive jumps and Canadian Sean Pettit with a rapid descent peppered with a Cab 5 and two 360.
The second run once again highlighted the young Canadian Sean Pettit who managed a very fluid and engaged line with huge tricks including a backflip Japan, American Sage Cattabriga-Alosa with four 360’s in a very fast run, German Bene Mayr with a huge 720 rodeo and Québéquois JP Auclair with three big tricks including a backflip. But this second run was particularly marked by an astonishing descent by Candide Thovex who chained a 720, a 360 and a backflip with dazzling transfers between each jump. Unfortunately, he lost a ski returning to the finish area as one of the bindings released on a landing. The judges then began to argue concerning the degree penalty they should charge him, his performance being the most impressive of the competition.
Fortunately, Candide made everyone agree on the third round by taking exactly the same line with the same velocity. Despite Sean Pettit’s new exceptional descent, including a huge 360 on a 50 foot drop - which earned him the Oakley Sick-O-Award honoring the best trick - Candide finished in first place and showed that he is back to his best after his accident in 2007. "This is my first event since my injury and I wanted to know where I was after a year of training. When Julien (Julien Régnier Lafforgue) invited me and told me who would compete, I could not refuse. I am really overwhelmed to find myself on the top of the podium, especially when you see the big guns who were present today," said Candide, all smiles after being copiously showered with champagne by his two podium companions: Canadian Sean Pettit who came second, and American CR Johnson who came third.
For the young Sean Pettit, at 17 an amazing skier and early star, this competition format fulfilled all his expectations: "This event is simply awesome. I could not be more pleased, everyone killed."
As for CR Johnson, returning to competition after a four year absence, the podium was a precious moment: "Today is a blessing. The vibe of the mountain and the people were truly amazing. It was a beautiful day."
Among those euphoric after the competition was also local skier Mathieu 'Mati' Imbert, who offered three superb runs to his spectators. Mati, with a smile even bigger than usual, was delighted to attend the birth of a new era of freeskiing: "We managed to assemble the perfect conditions. This year, we finished erecting a new step to our discipline. Last year it was already great, but here, inVars, at home, we really consolidated the future of our sport."
The usually discreet Julien Régnier Lafforgue, the event’s designer and a judge along side American Tanner Hall, German Nico Zacek and French Camille Jaccoux, could hardly conceal his satisfaction: "Conditions were incredible, very high, perfect, mission accomplished!"
Candide Thovex succeeds the Canadian Anthony Boronowski and adds a new victory to his prodigious track record. His performance, his interest, and the arrival of all the biggest stars of backcountry illustrates the importance of this new competition format. The success of the second edition of the Red Bull Linecatcher undoubtedly celebrates, as indicated by Mathieu Imbert, the birth of a new era of freeskiing competitions.
